While the Florida State Fairgrounds is a beloved spot in Tampa, few know of the rich history that led to its current icon status. Initially a modest gathering for farmers, the location has now become a high-tech arena — hosting some of the most interactive and sophisticated experiences in the country, including a breathtaking drone show this spring. But how, exactly, did that evolution happen?
A location rich in history
Take a trip down memory lane, to 1912. Railroad mogul Henry Morrison Flagler stages the first Palm Beach County Fair. At the very beginning, the festival was the perfect place to feature Florida’s finest agriculture, livestock and craftsmanship. The fair grew and became the spot for local culture and innovation, where cattle owners could compete for a chance at one of the fair’s grand prizes. Prized pigs, fire-eaters, sword-swallowers… the Palm Beach County Fair became a center of entertainment for the peculiar.

Today, the long-standing experience welcomes hundreds of thousands of guests. Every year, visitors can enjoy delicacies like bacon ice cream at the South Florida Fair — a true testament to the intersection of tradition and modernity of the Florida State Fairgrounds.
Over the years, the location has hosted more than livestock judging: it’s evolved into an event space welcoming experiences like boat shows, cultural festivals, dance competitions, sports tournaments — and most recently a captivating drone show featuring 1,200 drones.
